Description:
Dorsal spines: 11; Dorsal rays: 14-16; Anal spines: 4; Anal rays: 12-14.
Body oblong. Very large eye occupying most of head above mouth. Maxilla almost reaches to posterior edge of eye. Usually a single pair of tooth patches at front of lower jaw
just outside nape.
Colour. Silvery, suffused with pale salmon. Edges of scales dorsally on body deep blue to black. Head dark. A black blotch on the rear of the gill cover and on the
pectoral-fin base. Spinous dorsal fin reddish black with a broad median whitish band. A broad dark margin on the soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins.
Size:
Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 35cm TL. Commonly to 25cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Occurs on coral reefs and rocky areas in relatively shallow water (depth 1-25m). Seeks refuge in caves and beneath ledges by day, often in aggregations. Feeds at night
mainly on the larger zooplankton.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the trap and net fisheries, but is an uncommon component of the catch.
