Description:
Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 12-14; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 8.
Body moderately deep to somewhat slender. Dorsal profile of head moderately sloped. Scale rows on back rising obliquely above lateral line. Posterior profile of dorsal and
anal fins rounded to somewhat angular. Caudal fin truncate or slightly emarginate.
Colour. Head, nape, dorsally and upper flanks reddish to reddish brown. Shading to yellowish white ventrally. A series of six or seven yellow stripes on sides, more
prominent in younger fish. Juveniles with dark brown stripe from tip of snout through eye to midbody region. Oval black spot on lateral line below front dorsal fin rays
(most of spot below lateral line). Fins yellowish.
Size:
Maturity: Lm 17.1 cm FL. Range unknown 12 - ? cm. Max Length: 35 cm TL. Commonly 30 cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Adults inhabit a variety of habitats including coral reefs (depth 3-35 m), schools often in large aggregations with other lutjanids e.g. Lutjanus kasmira. Juveniles are
sometimes found in mangrove swamps and estuaries. Feed mainly on fishes, shrimps, crabs and other crustaceans. Feeding crepuscular.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line and fish trap fishery, it is a regular and occasionally abundant component of
the catch.
