Habitat and Ecology:
Reef associated. Adults inhabit coral reefs, including sheltered lagoons and outer reef slopes (depth 4-180 m usually 10-70 m). Usually solitary but occasionally found in
groups. Feeds mainly on fish but also crustaceans and cephalopod molluscs. Forms large spawning aggregations.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery, it is a common and sometimes abundant component of the catch.
The presence of many large individuals in a catch typically indicates that the catch was made in the Amirantes or southern islands, suggesting over fishing of the Mahe
plateau population.
