Description:

Dorsal spines 9; Dorsal rays: 10; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 7.

Moderately elongate body. Profile from tip of snout to origin of dorsal fin slightly convex, almost straight. Upper jaw extending almost to the level of anterior margin of 
eye opening. Second dorsal fin spine longest. Caudal fin forked deeply and with long lobes; pectoral fins do not reach beyond level of anus.

Colour. Silvery-blue body grading to brilliant silver ventrally. May have faint dusky bars especially juveniles. 4-9 slightly oblique dusky bands or columns of ovoid dark 
spots (rarely brownish) immediately below lateral line. Caudal fin dusky, lower edge of lower lobe hyaline.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 30cm TL. Commonly to 15cm TL.
 


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits coralline areas with sandy substrates (depth 0-50m). Feeds on small benthic invertebrates found in the sand. Forms schools.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in net fisheries, where on occasion it can be quite abundant.


Notes:

Differs from Gerres longirostris in having shallower body (mean 33% SL vs mean 39% SL in G. longirostris), proportionately larger eyes, and no dark margin to caudal fin.
