Description:

Dorsal spines: 13; Dorsal rays: 14-16; Anal spines: 2; Anal rays: 14-15.
Full-bodied, curvature of dorsal profile more pronounced than ventral; moderately laterally compressed small fish. Steep head profile. Posterior part of suborbital scaled. 3 rows of scales on operculum. First ray of pelvic fin elongated. Soft dorsal and anal fin rounded. Caudal fin moderately forked with broad, rounded lobes. 
Colour. Grey-brown base colour with six moderately narrow whitish bars on head and body. A band of dark spots on the nape, and a black spot at the pectoral-fin base. A black saddle on caudal peduncle just behind the dorsal fin.
 

Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 24cm TL. 

Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits exposed rocky shorelines, lagoons, inner reef flats, fringing reefs and piers in the surge zone (depth 0-3m). Associated with mixed coral and algal cover. Juveniles often occur in tide pools. Usually in pairs, occasionally forms small schools. Feeds on algae, crustaceans, and other benthic invertebrates. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males highly territorial and guard and aerate eggs.

Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, but is an uncommon component of the catch.
