Description:

Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 13-14; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 7-9.

Body moderately deep. Dorsal profile of head moderately sloped. Scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. Posterior profile of dorsal and anal fins angular or somewhat 
rounded. Caudal fin truncate or slightly emarginate.

Colour. Head, nape and dorsally dark brown. Face often with reddish tinge. Flanks and ventrally shading paler to yellowish white to white with a silvery sheen. Often with 
a series of 4 or 5 narrow yellow stripes on sides below lateral line. A prominent round, black spot on back below posterior part of spinous portion of dorsal fin.


Size:

Maturity: Lm 20.1 cm FL. Range 12-? cm. Max Length: 35 cm TL. Commonly 20 cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits coral reefs and associated shallow coastal habitats (depth 5-20 m). Juveniles frequent inshore areas over sand, silt, or coral rubble bottoms, occasionally in 
mangrove-lined streams and estuaries. Feed on small fish and invertebrates. Diet shifting from small prey fishes and crustaceans in juveniles to mostly crustaceans in adults.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the trap fishery, where it is a regular and sometimes numerous component of the catch. It is 
also occasionally caught in the hand line fishery.
