Description:

Dorsal spines: 11-12; Dorsal rays: 9-11; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 7-10.
Body oblong moderately compressed laterally. Posterior edge of maxilla reaches to vertical below middle of pupil. Teeth conical, slightly recurved, in villiform bands, the outer row much enlarged.
Preopercle strongly serrate, lower opercular spine very long and strong, extending distinctly beyond margin of opercular flap. Spinous dorsal fin strongly arched and deeply notched. Caudal fin emarginate.
Colour. Body silvery, dark nape and slightly dusky dorsally to silvery white below. 3-4 curved or crescent-shaped dark brown bands from the nape to the rear of the body, the lowermost continuing across the middle of the tail. Dorsal fin with blackish blotch on membranes between third and sixth spines. Soft portion of dorsal fin with membranes of first 3 rays tipped with black and membranes between fifth and seventh rays entirely black Striped caudal fin with lobes and tips dark. 
 


Size:

Maturity: Lm 13 cm SL. Range 9 - 17cm SL. Max Length: 27cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits coastal, brackish, and fresh waters (depth 20-350m). Found over shallow sandy bottoms, in the vicinity of river mouths. Enter estuaries and rivers but apparently reproduces solely in marine waters. Feeds on smaller fishes, benthic invertebrates, and also selectively on scales of various groups of fishes. Adults form loose aggregations.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in net fisheries and reportedly also occasionally on handline. It is an uncommon component of the catch.
