Description:

Large stingray with subcircular disc, mottled grey and black dorsal colouration and dull to creamy white ventrally. Snout short, very obtuse, tip not pointed. The tail 
slightly exceeds disc width in length has a very broad base tapering to the sting. The tail bears a deep and prominent skin fold along the underside. Thornlets short, 
clustered in narrow band along mid-body and in 2 small patches on each shoulder, absent in young.


Size:

Maturity: Males mature at 100-110cm DW, Female maturation size unknown. Max Length: Attains approx. 180cm DW (approx. 330cm TL).


Habitat and Ecology:

Mainly inshore in a wide range of habitats from shallow lagoons to outer reef slopes usually 1- 60m depth (but has been reported from more depths of more than 400 metres). 
Found singly or in groups. Feeds on benthic fish, bivalves and invertebrates. Ovoviviparous with litters of up to 7 pups.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the net fishery and may also be harpooned. It is a rare component of the catch. 
 


Notes:

Not normally aggressive, but is potentially dangerous.
