Description:

Dorsal spines: 6; Dorsal rays: 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal rays: 7-9.
Elongate, subcylindrical body. Snout long and pointed. Posterior tip of maxilla reaching to below anterior margin of eye. First gill arch without gill rakers. Pectoral fin 
tip extends beyond origin of first dorsal fin. Pelvic fin origin anterior to origin of first dorsal fin. Caudal fin deeply forked.

Colour. Grey dorsally, silvery on sides, fading to white ventrally. Numerous dark bars on sides of body. Bars oblique above lateral line, almost vertical below. Caudal fin 
blackish without white tips.


Size:

Maturity: Unknown. Max length: 90.0 cm TL; common length: 60.0 cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits seaward reefs, bays and turbid lagoons, nocturnally active, but forming relatively large schools during the day. Piscivore. 


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to specific fishery regulations. It is a regular and sometimes abundant component of the catch. It is the Sphyraenid most commonly
caught in the artisanal fishery.
