Description:
Dorsal spines: 11; Dorsal rays: 13-15; Anal spines: 4; Anal rays: 9.
Short snout, large eye. Five oblique scale rows on cheek. Maxilla extends to below rear edge of pupil. Anterior end of nasal bone with 2 short diverging spines. Preopercular
spine about 2/3 eye diameter. Opercle with 2 large subequal spines. Scale rows above lateral line 2.5. Short dorsal spines of which 4th usually longest.
Colour. Body red with silvery red stripes overlaid with blue iridescence especially on lower sides. Fins red. Tips of spinous dorsal membrane white and an oblong white spot
at middle of all spinous dorsal membranes except first 2. Leading edges of pelvic and anal-fin spines white.
Size:
Maturity: Unknown. Max length : 33.0 cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Inhabits coastal and offshore reef slopes and exposed reef margins (depth 1-183 m, usually 1-20 m). Benthopelagic. Cryptic during the day hiding in holes and crevices of
surge channels. Feeds at night on crustaceans, crustacean larvae, polychaete worms, and small fishes. Spine of preopercle mildly venomous.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. Status in artisanal fishery unknown.
