Description:
Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 15-17; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 7-8.
Small, moderately full-bodied basslet.
Males are reddish with a silvery stripe below the eye onto the gill cover. A red rectangular blotch on the flank. Anal fin is yellow. Pelvic and anal fins have elongate
filaments. Caudal fin red with long silvery blue filaments.
Females and juveniles are reddish dorsally fading to yellowish-orange on the flanks and then pale pink ventrally, a mostly red caudal fin with distinct
red tips, a clear or whitish anal fin and no red bar on flanks.
Size:
Maturity: Unknown. Max length: 14.0 cm TL. Commonly to 12.0 cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Occurs on open substrate with low reef and remote bommies (depth 5 - 100 m, usually 10 - 60 m). Juveniles inhabit shallow water, coastal reefs. This
species forms aggregations along current-swept drop-offs.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is not subject to the artisanal fishery.
Notes:
First recorded in Seychelles in 1992 in the central archipelago and 1993 in the Amirantes (Randall & Egmond 1994).
