Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 8; Dorsal rays: 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal rays: 7.

Moderately full-bodied goatfish. Maxilla reaches almost to the vertical line of the anterior margin of the eye. Barbels reach almost back to edge of preopercle.

Colour. Body pale to whitish, scale edges orange-yellow to pink. Broad pink band on shout from mouth to eye. Striped pattern dorsally (often indistinct) formed from red sot on each scale of the first three longitudinal scale rows. Indistinct midlateral yellow stripe on body, beginning above pectoral-fin base, narrowing posteriorly, then broadening notably and distinctly on caudal peduncle and into caudal fin fork (stripe not present in life).

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 23cm SL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Little is documented about the habitat of this species, the paratype was collected from an isolated patch of rock and coral, with sponges and much sand. This species is however a common component of the fish trap catch around the north of Mahé, so indicating a depth down to about 50m on mixed habitats, corals, sand and rubble seems probable.  


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, it is a regular and occasionally moderately numerous component of the catch.


Notes:

Originally described in Seychelles by Smith & Smith (1963), this species was considered a synonym of P. cinnabarinus in Smith & Heemstra (1986) and P. heptacanthus by Randall (2004). Randall & Heemstra (2009) however re-instated it as a valid species. It is distinct from P. heptacanthus by having 18–21 lower-limb gill rakers, compared to 21–23 for P. heptacanthus, shorter pelvic fins, 1.55–1.6 in HL, vs. 1.3–1.5 for P. heptacanthus, and in colour, mainly in lacking the dark reddish spot on and below the eighth lateral-line scale, and in having a striped pattern dorsally on the body from a red spot on each scale of the upper three longitudinal scale rows
