Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 11; Dorsal rays: 13-15 (usually 14); Anal spines: 4; Anal rays: 11-13.

Full-bodied soldierfish. Lower jaw of adults strongly projecting when mouth closed. A single pair of tooth patches at front of lower jaw outside mouth; vomerine teeth in a 
triangular patch with rounded corners.

Colour. Red, the scale centres pale red dorsally and silvery white on sides and ventrally. Opercular membrane black to well below opercular spine. Naked part of pectoral 
axil black. Outer third to half of spinous dorsal fin yellow to orange-yellow, red basally. Leading edges of caudal-fin lobes, soft dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins white 
often with a dark submarginal streak.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 30cm TL. Commonly to 22cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits caves and hides under ledges of subtidal reef flats, channels and margins to outer reef slopes by day (depth 3-160m, usually 10-30m). Feeds on reef flats, channels 
and margins at night. Planktivore. Benthopelagic.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, where it is a regular but not abundant component of the catch.
