Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 9 - 10; Dorsal rays: 13-15; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 10-11.

Robust bodied snapper. Head profile markedly convex. Large mouth with maxilla extending to below anterior half of eye. Posterior lobes of dorsal and anal fins distinctly 
pointed. Pectoral fins long, reaching level of anus. Caudal fin emarginate. 

Colour. Adults dark grey to black, often with silver highlights, eye with yellow iris. Reticulate pale blue lines on head visible on fresh specimens.
Juveniles black on upper sides, larger juveniles with 3 to 6 white spots, and white below. Black bar through eye. Black pectoral fins and a black stripe from a pectoral 
region to lower caudal lobe. Tips and middle of caudal fin white. 


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 75 cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Adults occur, often in shoals, on steep slopes of outer reefs (depth 5-90 m, usually less than 30 m). Juveniles and some adults solitary. Feed on fish and crustaceans. 
Forms spawning aggregations.
 


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the handline fishery, it is an occasional component of the catch in low numbers.
