Description:

Dorsal spines: 9; Dorsal rays: 22-24; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 18-20.

Body oblong and compressed; dorsal and ventral profiles equally convex. Lower jaw projects beyond upper jaw. Upper jaw with a narrow band of small teeth; lower jaw with an 
irregular row of small teeth, except for a narrow band anteriorly. Lateral line a relatively low arch. Breast scaled all over.

Colour: generally silvery, greyish above, paler below. No opercular spot but adults with dark posterior margin of preopercle. Sometimes with 6 or 7 dusky oblique bands on 
flanks. Large adults occasionally with scattered dark blotches or a few small yellow spots on sides. Leading edge of pelvic fins and distal margin of anal fin with a narrow 
white border. Pectoral fins pale. Second dorsal, anal and caudal fins dusky to dark.

Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 50 cm TL. Commonly 30-40cm TL.

Habitat and Ecology:

Appears to be largely confined to outer reef areas (depth 2-200m) and is often taken while bottom fishing. Found singly or in groups. No information available on dietary preferences.

Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery where it is a regular but not numerous component of the catch.
