Description:

Dorsal spines: 0; Dorsal rays: 15-19; Anal spines: 0; Anal rays: 8-9.
An elongate, fusiform fish. Small, subterminal mouth below a projecting, conical snout. Upper jaw not reaching to eye. Lower jaw broadly rounded in outline. Molariform tooth
patches on roof and floor of mouth, broadly oval in shape. Scales in lateral line usually 71 to 75.
Colour. Bright silvery fish to whitish ventrally, with blue-green hue dorsally. A spot of black pigment often present on the underside of snout, usually prominent in 
juveniles but disappearing in large adults. 

Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 90cm SL.

Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits mud flats of turbid inner reefs and mangroves and sandy lagoons (depth 1-10m).Feeds primarily upon crustaceans, including mantis shrimps and crab, also polychaetes,
bivalves and amphipods, by grubbing in the substratum with its snout. Can tolerate oxygen poor water by inhaling air into a lung-like air bladder. Spawning occurs in open 
waters. Eggs are pelagic.

Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in gillnet and beach seine fisheries, but is a relatively rare component of the catch. 
It is also targeted in the outer islands by the catch and release sports fishery.
