Description:

Dorsal spines: 10-11; Dorsal rays: 13-15; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 12-14.

Body elongate, oval shaped and moderately compressed. Head short with short snout and small terminal mouth. Jaws with a single row of incisor-like teeth. Maxilla barely 
reaching back to anterior edge of eye. Interorbital region narrow. Ctenoid scales covering interorbital region, the postorbital region, the cheek, the operculum and along 
the body to the caudal fin. Dorsal and anal fin very low. Caudal peduncle broad and caudal fin emarginate with slightly pointed lobes.
 
Colour. Body base colour silvery shading to metallic blue dorsally and white ventrally. Golden horizontal stripes run along the body. Golden streak beneath eye from snout 
to behind anterior edge of eye. Another golden line edging bottom of eye and behind eye. Golden colour along edge of operculum and base of pectoral fin. Fins grey or 
slightly darker grey than body colour. Dark posterior margin to caudal fin.
 

 


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range 36 - ?cm TL. Max length 90cm TL.  
 


Habitat and Ecology:

Occurs over hard, algal coated bottoms of exposed surf-swept outer reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs (depth 0-40m). Adults usually close to the coastline usually in 
groups and sometimes schools with other kyphosid species. Young (up to 5 cm) are found among floating seaweed where they feed on small crustaceans. Adults feed mainly on 
benthic brown algae and exhibit large range areas. Oviparous. 
 


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery, but is only an occasional component of the catch.
