Description:

Long canine teeth anteriorly in jaws, the longest in 1 row of 3 teeth at front of upper jaw.
A large distinctive moray with a pattern of large close set dark brown blotches, on body and fins, which form irregular bars. The interspaces are creamy white colour forming a reticulum which also contain much smaller dark spots. The Snout and head have a strong yellow caste which continues paler dorsally.

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range 77-? cm. Max Length: 150cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Benthic, inhabits reef-flats, lagoons and seaward coral and rocky reefs (depth 1-110m, usually 1-26m). Nocturnal. Feeds on fishes, octopus, and crustaceans. Can be aggressive towards humans.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the trap and hand line fisheries, but is an uncommon component of the catch.
