Description:

Dorsal spines: 0; Dorsal rays: 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal rays: 0.
Dorsal-fin origin on head. Front of jaws usually with 4 large canines on each side.
Cream-white body with numerous dark brown to black polygonal spots forming a reticulated pattern. Spot pattern very variable. Some individuals may have a near black overall appearance. Spots on head less regular in shape and more numerous. Spots more widely spaced on belly, frequently with light whitish margin. 
 


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 300cm TL. Typically up to 175cm TL. 


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits reef flats and outer reef slopes (depth 1-40m, typically 5-40m). Often in holes with cleaner wrasses or shrimps. Feeds on cephalopods and small fishes. Large adults may be aggressive. One of the two largest of Indo-Pacific morays.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line and trap fishery, but is an uncommon to rare component of the catch.
