Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 11; Dorsal rays: 13-15; Anal spines: 4; Anal rays: 8-9.

Oblong bodied Squirrelfish. Dorsal profile of head slightly convex. Maxilla extending posteriorly from front of pupil to the centre of eye. Preopercular spine long, the length about one eye diameter.

Colour. Head and body red. In life the posterior third of the body may be silvery white. The scales rimmed posteriorly with silvery white. A saddle-like silvery white spot 
dorsally on caudal peduncle (often disappears after death). Distinctive white edge to upper opercular spine.  Spinous dorsal fin light red to whitish, the outer triangular 
part of each membrane deep red. No blackish markings.
 


Size:

Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 25cm TL, commonly to 18cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits (and common in) outer reef areas and also occurs in lagoons and drop-offs (depth 2-40m). Nocturnal. Solitary or in groups. Feeds primarily on benthic crabs and shrimp.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, where it is a regular though not typically numerous component of the catch.
