Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 9; Dorsal rays: 12; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 12

Elongate compressed body, large individuals may become fuller bodied. Jaws with two pairs of anterior canine teeth, first pair larger. Caudal fin of juveniles and small 
initial phase fish rounded, becoming double emarginate in large adults.

Colour. Juveniles white with three narrow orange red stripes.

Initial phase greenish, bluish or pinkish with 20 to 23 orangish brown bars on body and a black spot on opercular flap.

Terminal males light blue-green, or light green to light red with lavender blue or light green bars and a pale zone in pectoral region of body. Head blue, blue-green 
or green with contrasting irregular green or blue pattern.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 50 cm TL.  Commonly 30-35 cm TL.
 


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits seaward reefs typically over pockets or channels of sand and rubble (depth 1-35 m, usually 5-30 m. Juveniles normally occur in closely-knit groups that remain 
close to the bottom. Adults found high above substrate, females usually in small groups, males solitary and territorial. It feeds mainly on fishes and crustaceans, 
occasionally on brittlestars and polychaete worms. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery, but is an uncommon component of the catch.
