Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 8; Dorsal rays: 29-35; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 18-22.

Body elongated, fusiform, moderate height, somewhat compressed laterally and covered with small cycloid scales. Short and pointed head. The terminally located mouth is 
large with a posteriorly broad maxilla reaching the middle of the eye.  The pectoral fins are shorter than the head, and approximately equal in length to the pelvic fins. 
The second dorsal fin is much longer than the anal fin. Second dorsal and anal fins with low anterior lobe. Caudal fin is lunate.

Colour. Bluish grey or olivaceous above, silvery white below. Dark amber stripe running from the nose to just in front of the dorsal fin. A dusky “mask” stretching from 
the upper jaw through the eye to the first dorsal fin. Amber stripe along midside of body; fins dusky. Second dorsal and anal fins with low anterior lobe. The juveniles 
show 5 vertical, dark body bands and a sixth band at the end of the caudal peduncle.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range 80 - 127cm. Max length: 190cm TL, commonly to 100cm TL. 
 


Habitat and Ecology:

Found over deep seaward reefs or at deep offshore holes or drop-offs (depth 1-360m). Occasionally enters coastal bays. In small schools or solitary. Juveniles are 
occasionally found well offshore, sheltering amongst floating algae and debris. Feed on benthic and pelagic fishes as well as squid and crustaceans. Fish commonly 
preyed upon include the bigeye scad (Selar crumenophthalmus) and sardines.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery where it is an occasional and not particularly numerous 
component of the catch.
