Information

Description:

Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 12; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 8.

Body elongate, robust. Interorbital space flat. Lower jaw slightly protruding. Both jaws with an outer row of conical and canine teeth and an inner band of villiform teeth. 
Scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. Bases of dorsal and anal fins without scales, their last soft rays extended in short filaments. Pectoral fins long, reaching level 
of anus. Caudal fin forked.

Colour. Body colour variable from brownish to lavender or reddish purple. Snout and interorbital space with narrow yellow lines and blue spots. Dorsal and caudal fins light 
blue or lavender with reddish-orange margins.


Size:

Maturity: Lm 52 cm FL. Range: 37 - ? cm FL . Max Length: 100 cm TL. Commonly to 50 cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Deep water. Occurs over rocky bottoms and rocky reefs (depth 40-400 m, usually 180-270 m). Migrates vertically at night to upper part of its habitat to feed on small fishes, 
shrimps, crabs, amphipods, ascidians and salps. Spawning on the Mahe plateau occurs from October to April peaking between February and April and in November (Mees 1993).


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery during deep water fishing, it is an uncommon component of the catch.

The sustainable yield for the Mahe Plateau was estimated to be 233–268 tonnes per annum and the catch in 1990 was 200 tonnes (Mees 1993).
