Description:
Dorsal spines: 11; Dorsal rays: 14-16; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8-9.
Long streamlined, pale grey-brown body, with vivid orange-red spots. Spots also on head, dorsal fin and base of caudal fin. 3-4 dappled white stripes run length of body.
Head pointed, maxilla reaches past eye. Soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins rounded. Juveniles (less than 8cm TL) with longitudinal dark-edged pale bluish grey stripes on
a gold background; a blue-edged black spot or double spot at the base of the caudal fin.
Size:
Maturity: Lm ?, range 30 - ? cm. Max length : 65.0 cm.
Habitat and Ecology:
Inhabits coral rich areas (depth 5 to 80 m) and clear waters on lagoon and seaward reefs. Typically solitary. Feeds mainly on fish and probably crustaceans. Juveniles
mimic some of the small lined wrasses of the genus Halichoeres or dark damsels in surge zones. This allows the species to approach their prey.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. A regular but not abundant component of the catch. It is caught primarily in the fish trap fishery
but also the handline fishery
