Description:

Dorsal spines: 8; Dorsal rays: 27-33; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 18-22.

Body elongate, fusiform, relatively deep, laterally compressed. Upper head and body profile distinctly more convex than lower profile. Lateral line curved over pectoral fin, 
then straight to tailfin. The anterior lobe of the second dorsal fin about twice as long or longer than the longest dorsal-fin spines, and longer than the pectoral fin. 
Caudal peduncle slender. Caudal fin strongly forked.

Colour. Dorsally brown or silvery blue-green to olivaceous, ventral paler or silvery, sometimes with a brassy or lavender sheen. Amber midlateral stripe usually present. 
Yellowish brown from the snout through the eye to the front of the dorsal fin (stripe becoming less distinct with age). Fins dark or yellowish except pelvic fins and anal 
fin whitish distally. Juveniles less than 18 cm fork length with six dark bars on body.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 80cm FL. Commonly to 55cm FL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Adults benthopelagic and usually well offshore on outer reef slopes and banks (depth 5-245m, usually 30-150m). Juveniles less than 20 cm associate with seaweed and other 
floating objects and open ocean. They form small groups. They feed mainly on fishes, but also on invertebrates. Eggs are pelagic.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery where it is an occasional and not particularly numerous component 
of the catch.


Notes:

Seriola dumerili can be distinguished by its shorter dorsal and anal fin lobes.
