Description:
Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 8.
Body elongate, robust. Interorbital space flat. Jaws about equal or the lower slightly protruding, both with an outer row of conical and canine teeth and an inner band of
villiform teeth. Scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. Dorsal and anal fins without scales, their last soft rays extended in short filaments. Pectoral fins long,
reaching level of anus. Caudal fin forked.
Colour. Body purplish or brownish violet. Sides with numerous yellow spots or faint, yellow, chevron-shaped bands. Iris yellow. Yellow band staring on snout runs “through”
eye to edge of operculum, second band runs below eye. Upper lip yellow. Dorsal fin yellowish to yellowish-brownish. The upper lobe of the caudal fin yellow. Larger males
exhibit more yellow on ventral caudal lobe, usually forming a distinct blotch. Females with or without yellowish colour on ventral lobe of caudal fin, but if yellow present,
not forming a distinct blotch.
Size:
Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 45 cm TL. Commonly to 25 cm TL.
Habitat and Ecology:
Reef-associated fish which also occurs over rocky reefs and rocky bottoms (depth 70-350 m, usually 180-270 m). Feeds on fishes, pelagic tunicates and salps.
Fishery Status:
This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the hand line fishery in deep waters such as at the “bordaz” (edge of the Mahé plateau), it
is an uncommon to rare component of the catch.
