Description:

Dorsal spines: 8; Dorsal rays: 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal rays: 7.

Body slightly elongate and moderately compressed. Snout short, its dorsal profile straight to slightly concave. Mouth small, maxilla reaching a vertical through posterior 
nostril. A single row of well-spaced, stout, conical teeth in jaws.  Barbels relatively short, not reaching to or barely passing rear of preopercle. Dorsal fins well separated.
Posterior margin of caudal-fin lobes convex.
 
Colour. Light red, darker dorsally, markedly paler ventrally. Large prominent, dark-edged scales except ventrally. 2 whitish to pale red bands from side of snout running above 
and below eye, through eye along back, fading to end beneath front of second dorsal fin. A darker brown patch behind eye. Sometimes another short white stripe from the corner 
of the mouth across the pectoral fin base. A white or pale pink spot anteriorly on upper half of caudal peduncle covering about three horizontal rows of scales, followed by a 
black or dusky spot with darker scale edges that may extend further laterally than preceding pale patch. Fins light red to reddish grey, the second dorsal, anal and caudal 
fins often with small brown spots.  Pelvic fin with leading white edge. Second dorsal and anal fins often with narrow white margins. Tips of caudal lobes often pale or white.


Size:

Maturity: Lm unknown. Range unknown. Max Length: 38 cm TL. 
 


Habitat and Ecology:

A coral-reef associated species of lagoons, outer reef zones and seagrass beds (depth 2-91 m, usually 2-40 m). Often in small aggregations. Feeds on benthic invertebrates, 
mostly crustaceans, at night. 


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, but is a relatively uncommon component of the catch.
