Description:

Dorsal spines: 10; Dorsal rays: 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal rays: 8.

Body moderately deep. Snout short blunt. Posterior nostril a narrow longitudinal slit, closer to orbit than to anterior nostril. Eye situated close to dorsal profile. 
Lateral teeth in jaws of adults molars or rounded; cheek without scales; inner surface of pectoral-fin base densely covered with scales.

Colour. Body olive grey above becoming silvery white below with a large elliptical black blotch broadly edged in yellow on sides below lateral line. Sometimes exhibits 
light blue dots bordering lower rim of eye and around nostrils. Fins white to pinkish, dorsal and anal fins lightly mottled or striped, caudal fin orange to red.


Size:

Maturity: Lm 19.5 cm TL. Range unknown. Max Length: 50.0 cm TL.


Habitat and Ecology:

Inhabits shallow sandy, coral rubble, mangroves, lagoons and seagrass areas inshore and adjacent to coral reefs (depth 0-20 m). Utilizes seagrass beds as nursery grounds and 
as a larger adult begins to use reef habitat. Most often observed solitary but sometimes in small schools. Feeds on polychaetes, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms and small 
fish. Individuals have small, well-defined home ranges which are influenced by interspecific competition among similarly sized individuals, home range increases with body 
size. This species is considered a protogynous hermaphrodite.


Fishery Status:

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the trap and handline fisheries, but is a quite rare component of the catch.
