Description:

Dorsal spines: 13; Dorsal rays: 11-14; Anal spines: 2; Anal rays: 11-13.
Ovoid, laterally compressed small fish. Elongated soft dorsal and anal fin. Broad peduncle. Caudal fin forked. 
Colour. Whitish base colour. Five relatively broad dark bars on the body. The first descending from the origin of the dorsal fin to the base of the pectoral fin (fin axil black). The middle three extending onto the dorsal fin. The fifth midway down the peduncle. Yellowish dorsally and onto dorsal fin membranes. Yellow spots on lower flanks and sometimes at base of anal and caudal fin. Pectoral fin transparent. Pelvic fin with white rays and transparent membranes. Caudal fin grey. 
 

Maturity: Lm 12cm TL. Range unknown. Max Length: 20cm TL. 

Inhabits the upper edge of outer reef slopes and inshore rocky reefs (depth 1-15m). Juveniles associated with drifting seaweed. Feeds on zooplankton, benthic algae, and small invertebrates. Forms large aggregations at spawning sites that are timed with large tides that carry their pelagic offspring far offshore. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs. 

This species is not protected or subject to fishery regulations. It is caught in the fish trap fishery, but is a relatively uncommon component of the catch.
